CHAPTER 15

Despite the lingering drizzle, Kate rose to the sound of birds chirping. She donned her gown and moved her club to lean against the wall between the night table and the bed. The hefty weight in her hands was reassuring, but so was the thought that Gavin might already be up and running around the pond.

She strode over to the window and was rewarded with a nice glimpse of his back as he dashed to the far side of the body of water. His routine was comforting. After everything that had escaped from her lips last night, he was still here.

He hadn’t left.

Gavin now knew she was well acquainted with Will and Camelot. Damn that delicious wine and her worry over her plan. The combination had caused her to make some vital errors, but she wouldn’t do it again.

They’d almost become intimate last night. But she couldn’t blame that on the spirits. Even this morning, she craved to feel his lips on her mouth, his skin next to hers. She wanted that intimacy with him. She was shocked because she’d never felt the urge to be that close to anyone. If he came to her room tonight, she would let him teach her what it was to know a man. She was, after all, close to twenty-one years of age. It was time she experienced being with someone.

She dressed herself, then went down to break her fast. Shortly after she sat, Gavin walked in and took the seat next to her. Even when there was silence between them, it was a relaxed calm of just being in each other’s presence.

Other guests poured into the room, and soon the space was filled with a buzz of constant voices. After the meal, she was whisked away with the ladies to finish preparing for the afternoon’s entertainment. She’d never been to one of these house parties before, but she had to admit she fancied the project they were working on, gathering costumes, and preparing for people to play parts in their little skits. The act was similar to preparing for one of her jobs, but this was for smaller parts, and the stakes weren’t as stressful.

She truly enjoyed this.

As she and Mrs. Bartrom finished pulling the last of the costumes together, Lady Stonehaven appeared in the small parlor they had used to prepare. It was a room next to the study where Gavin had pulled her into the closet. The chamber was decorated in a more feminine style and served as a study for Lady Stonehaven when she had correspondence to prepare.

“Magnus and Stewart have returned,” Lady Stonehaven announced.

Relief flooded her. She would be able to proceed with the plan today. The tension she’d held in eased slightly.

“Wonderful news,” Irene proclaimed. “Miss Reid, did you select a part for them?”

“Aye.
