Paul Cuffee and the Failure of Freedom

Despite the religious and, in the Upper South, secular feeling of generosity on the part of whites that made life more tolerable for Southern blacks in the decade after the American Revolution, planters renewed their commitment to black bondage. In most cases, indeed, it scarcely slackened. Although the Lower South was not as affected by the abolitionist trend of the times as regions farther north, it was not completely exempt either. The military proposals of John Laurens, to arm slaves and free them at the war’s conclusion, were just one example. A few slaveowners were even moved to manumission. South Carolinian John Peronneau freed his slave Romeo in 1781 “in consequence of my aversion to and abhorrence of Slavery which natural Religion and common sense do equally condemn.”
