The great hall was filled with clanfolk, loud, boisterous warriors and the Sutherland family. Empty platters and trenchers covered the tables. With a bit of nervousness, Callum stood and walked to where the Sutherlands were all seated.
He reached his hand out toward Donella. âCare to take a stroll, lass?â
She nodded and stood, taking his hand. They seemed to gain the notice of her family and others in the great hall as they walked toward the door. They stepped into the inner bailey. ââTis a beautiful night.â
âAye, I agree, lass, but the beautiful part of the night is ye.â
âThere ye go again. I donna think I am beautiful.â
He moved them so they were again out of view of the warriors on duty and anyone leaving the great hall. He turned her towards him and cupped her cheeks. âAye, ye are beautiful, but I wonât argue the point with ye. Iâd rather do this.â He lowered his head and his lips joined hers. Her lips were sweet, warm, and plump.
So as not to upset her like the last time, he kept his tongue in his mouth and just enjoyed the feel of her sweetness. He pulled back and rested his forehead on hers. âAch, love, yer lips drive me crazy.â
She looked up at him, and he noted no fear in her eyes. He leaned in again and kissed her forehead, her cheeks, and when she dinna push him away, his lips wandered down farther and sucked on her ear. He felt a slight stiffening of her body, but then she relaxed.
âThatâs it, mo ghraidh. Relax.â
Callum pulled her closer, so their bodies met. Donella slowly moved her hands up his chest and then encircled his neck. Callum made his way down to her jaw and continued his light kisses.
When his hand moved to her bottom to pull her closer, she pushed him away. âThat is enough for now.â
He held in his groan. âTwas going to be a painful journey to eventually get Donella in bed, but she was worth the effort. Now âtwas probably the best time to speak to her about their future.
He grasped her hands in his and stared into her crystal blue eyes. âI have been granted permission from the laird to offer ye marriage.â He pulled her hands up to his lips and kissed the backs. âI want verra much to be yer husband. To be the mon who protects ye and cares for ye. The mon who gives ye bairns.â She flinched at his last comment. âWhat say ye?â
Donella closed her eyes. âI care verra much for ye, Callum. I cannoâ imagine any other mon as my husband.â She opened her eyes, tears brimming on the edges. âYe ken what happened to me. And ye do noâ ken what also happened because I canât remember myself, except that Dorathia told me I had beenâ¦violated.â She barely got the word out.
He pulled her against his body, offering comfort and protection.
âIf we marry, I cannoâ promise I will be at ease with the marriage bed.
