After dinner port had dragged on too bloody long. Normally, Russell enjoyed Clayworth’s company. He was a noble fellow, the earl; and the man loved and doted on Cordie. All in all, he was a fine brother-in-law. Of course, normally, Russell didn’t have to listen to Clayworth gush about and extoll every excruciating virtue of his offspring. And Lucas Beckford was just as bad. For a one-time rake, Beckford had certainly been transformed into something else, something that sent cold chills racing down Russell’s spine. God forbid the same transformation ever find him. A life of boredom and tedium was not something he could endure, he was more than certain.
When the other gentlemen had finally finished their inane chatter about drool, naptimes, and first words, the trio made their way to the drawing room to reconvene with the ladies. Immediately, Russell’s gaze found Bridget, sitting in a wingback chair opposite Lady Juliet.
The Irish lass’ brow appeared pinched, just as it had all throughout dinner, as though something awful was troubling her. That harridan Felicity Pierce had probably said something horrid before they’d all gone into the dining room. Unfortunately, Russell hadn’t been able to ask her about it with so many ears in close proximity. Of course, the same number of ears were still present, but the drawing room allowed for more movement, more privacy, more intimacy, in a way.
Russell made a direct path for Bridget’s chair. She tilted her head to the side to better see him and she smiled.
“Enjoy your port?”
He snorted. “I have heard all I want to about tiny, sticky fingers. Happily married men are beyond boring.”
Her smile widened. “They sound charmin’.”
Though he disagreed whole-heartedly, Russell couldn’t help but smile in return. She had that affect on him, apparently. She could make him smile when he felt the furthest thing from it. “Is that what I need to do to charm you? Discuss infant drool?”
Bridget giggled. “Charmin’, indeed. Do share your thoughts on droolin’, Captain.”
At least he had her laughing and smiling, looking happier than she had when he’d first entered the drawing room. Seeing the twinkle in her eyes lifted his heart. “Take a stroll about the room with me?”
She nodded and Russell reached his hand out to her. He pulled Bridget to her feet, and tingles raced across his arm from the contact, settling somewhere near his heart. So very strange. His gaze locked with hers, and he wondered if she felt the same thing. But Bridget only smiled sweetly, as she was apt to do. Russell shook his head to clear his thoughts, then offered her his arm.
Her delicate touch sent warmth spreading through him, but Russell refused to acknowledge the sensation. He led her toward the far wall and once they were out of earshot from the others, he asked, “What’s troubling you?”
“Troublin’ me?”
“Mmm.” He cast her a sidelong glance. “When we walked through the doors just now, you looked troubled and you did most of dinner as well. Did Felicity say something awful?”
“No.
