THE LAW OF GIVING: BEING AND BECOMING
Timeless leaders are defined not so much by what they do but by who they are. The being of a leader is the most critical factor in determining what the leader and his organization become in the ultimate analysis. Krishna has conveyed to Arjuna that his being dwells in the infinite and the timeless. This being, however, functions in the finite space and specific time when He becomes something. This is the essence of the timeless leaderâs journey: The whole being functions as the part without ever losing the essence of the whole. The light of the Sun is reflected through a prism. The being of white light becomes seven different colours as it passes through the prism. The same white light functions as differentiated colours, yet the original white light remains pure and unsullied by this fragmentation. Krishna says:
The entire universe has the essence of my unmanifest and timeless being.
Although I do not exist physically in all creatures, yet all creatures exist within me.
(9.4)
This is similar to the white light that is not visible in all the colours of the spectrum, whereas all the colours can be seen as parts of white light. To take another example, the Sun exists millions of miles away from us. Yet we can take a magnifying glass and burn a piece of paper with the rays of the Sun. The Sun is not physically inside the burning paper, yet it becomes the heat that manifests in the objective phenomenon of the burning paper.
How is it that the timeless being of Krishna is part of our physical world and yet not of it? The reason is simple: Our physical energies are limited by the form of our body; our mental energies are limited by our conditioned mind and our habitual thoughts. But the energy of the unmanifest and timeless being includes and transcends our physical structures and mental formations. It is as difficult to grasp this unmanifest being through our senses as it is to be able to see oneâs own face without a mirror! Yet, Krishna urges Arjuna to be acquainted with that faceless-face that is nothing but pure and unmanifest being. There is a Zen saying: âWhat was your face like before you were born?â This is exactly what Krishna is asking Arjuna to consider.
This give-and-take between being and becoming, between the unmanifest and the manifest, is the very basis of our Self-organizing universe. Everything in our universe follows the law and logic of an open system. An open system continuously exchanges energy with the environment outside its physical boundaries. A seed is an open system that imports energy from soils, Sun, and water. Like a seed that gives up its form to become a tree, an open system surrenders its form to reorganize itself into newer and higher forms. By remaining receptive to new information and by breaking out of its conditioning, an open system, like a seed, is able to access the timeless cycle of life.
