Chapter Eleven

“Did he just say you were wanted in Paul’s death?” Emma exclaimed, leaning over the seat.

Kenneth nodded, his throat suddenly dry. What could he say?

“What’s going on?” she asked, her tone of disbelief matching the thoughts going through Kenneth’s head.

He shrugged, trying to make sense of it himself. “I don’t know, Emma, I honestly have no idea.”

She rubbed her temples as if she had a headache. “Turn here,” she instructed. “We need some gas.”

They stopped at the little country gas station and Kenneth got out to fill up. He clapped his hands together at the cold, anxiously waiting for the pump to finish. As soon as it clicked that it was done, he went inside to pay. Rubbing his hands together for friction warmth, he looked around the candy aisle for a moment. Maybe a snack would help him wake up. He stared at the selection when he noticed one of the two cashiers watching him closely. He smiled, but the other man didn’t smile back. Just get out of there, the voice in his head urged. He grabbed a carton of milk, some eggs, and a newspaper before he went to the counter, pulling his wallet from his back pocket and taking out some bills. The cashier at the register didn’t seem to pay him any attention at all, but the small dark-haired one was still staring. Kenneth took his change, shoved it in his wallet and left. As he walked to the car, he looked back and could see the little man pointing at him while talking to the one at the register. Kenneth hurried and got in.

“I think that guy spotted me,” he said as he put the car in gear and drove away. “How much further is this cabin?”

Emma looked out the back window as if she could see who Kenneth was talking about. “The cabin is just ahead.”

After a few more turns down a road that was getting smaller and smaller, Emma finally saw the turn-off to the cabin. The paved road hadn’t been plowed in a while and the car slipped and slid up to a medium-sized log cabin. “Are we here?” Julia asked sleepily.

“We’re here,” Emma soothed. “I’ll go and tuck you into bed, darling.”

Kenneth helped the women out of the car, hefted Julia into his arms, and they waited while Emma unlocked the cabin door. She went inside and turned on the lights. “Julia’s room is upstairs first door on your right.”

Kenneth adjusted Julia in his arms and took her upstairs. He put her down on the bed and Emma took off her shoes. “I’ll go start the fire,” Kenneth said.

Emma nodded, but didn’t say anything. She’s probably just concentrating on getting her daughter comfortable in bed, Kenneth thought to himself. Don’t read anything into it.

He went back downstairs, took off his coat and got to work on the fireplace. It took him a little longer than normal, but before long he had a nice fire going. Sitting down in the chair across from it, he stared at the flames.
