CHAPTER ELEVEN

Harriet drove home after church on Sunday morning to take care of Maxwell and Charlie, change her clothes, and fix a lunch for her and Will to enjoy on their drive to Richmond.

“Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches sound good, don’t they, Maxwell?” Harriet said to the dachshund. “We’re researching the legend of the lost drummer boy after all.”

Maxwell yipped as if in agreement then pawed the air. Harriet chuckled, placed a bit of peanut butter on a dog biscuit, and gave it to him.

Harriet placed the sandwiches, made with slices of hearty grain bread and cut in triangles, into an insulated tote along with carrot sticks, apple slices, the rock cakes she’d bought the day before from Poppy, and bottles of water. The light lunch was meant to stave off hunger pangs while they saw the sights. Then they would enjoy a local meal before returning to White Church Bay.

When the tote was packed and zipped, Harriet squatted in front of Maxwell. “Will and I will be gone for a few hours. But we’ll have playtime when I get back. Until then, let’s take this thing off, okay?”

Maxwell pushed his nose beneath Harriet’s folded arms, and she hugged his long body then removed the wheeled prosthesis. She settled Maxwell in his bed with another biscuit slathered in peanut butter.

She finished tidying the kitchen just as the front doorbell rang. “That should be Will,” she said, grabbing the tote and giving Maxwell one more pat.

She went through the hallway between the stairs and the study to reach the front entrance.

When she opened the door, Will greeted her with a warm smile. “Let me take that,” he said, reaching for the tote. “You ready to go?”

“Ready and excited.” She retrieved a tan hip-length fleece-lined jacket from the nearby hall tree, and they set out for the drive to Richmond in Will’s Picanto.

Once they were on the main road, Harriet doled out the sandwiches, veggies, and rock cakes. The time sped by as she enjoyed Will’s company.

As they neared the historic market town, Richmond Castle came into view. It towered over the village below and the River Swale, which curved south of the grounds. Harriet opened a travel guide she’d found in Grandad’s library and scanned the castle’s listing.

“The origins date to 1071,” she said. “I can hardly fathom it.”

“That’s only a couple of years after William the Conqueror swept through Yorkshire,” Will explained. “After he conquered these lands, he gave them to his buddies.”

“In this case, Alan Rufus of Brittany. But the keep—” She peered through the windshield at the honey-colored sandstone castle. “Is that what I’m seeing? That’s the keep?”

“Sure is,” Will said, chuckling, apparently at her excitement. “Also known as a fortified tower.”

“I’ll never get used to how old things are here. Thousand-year-old castles. Roman ruins.” Harriet released a deep, awe-filled sigh. “It’s all so fascinating.”

“What were you saying about the keep?”

As difficult as it was to pull herself away from the sight of the high tower overlooking the town, Harriet returned to the guide.
