7. Grief
1. What is Grief?
2. Treatment for Bereavement
3. Treatment for Divorce or Separation
1. What is Grief?
Most of us will have our answer to this question since it’s not possible to go through life without experiencing times of grief to a greater or lesser extent. The loss of someone or something of great importance to us. Usually this is the death of someone we love which causes great grief. Also the loss of a beloved animal such as a dog or horse which has been a part of our lives for many years. Death is of course inevitable and very often expected. But sudden death due to an accident is very different and can cause enormous grief. Separation or divorce although quite different can have a similarity in that it could involve the ‘loss’ of a loved person.
In some cases the grief will be short-term and this is a normal human emotional response and during the grieving process we can learn to accommodate the loss and get on with our lives. Therapeutic intervention is rarely needed and may indeed be particularly unwelcome. Nevertheless, how well we manage that grief can have a major impact on our quality of life.
Unmanaged grief can lead to chronic post-traumatic stress and, if it continues to remain unresolved, may develop into post-traumatic stress disorder.
We use the term “bereavement” to define the response to the death of a loved one yet it is only one form of grief. The common emotional pattern of bereavement is easy for others to understand and empathise with. However, if that pattern is mirrored when the grief arises from incidents not involving death, such as divorce, then that understanding and empathy is reduced and may even not be present at all! This loss of support, which can be real or imagined can speed progression into psychological disorder, especially for children.
