‘MISCELLANIES: FRANCE AND AMERICA’

'Miscellanies: France and America', Thomas's Massachusetts Spy, or Worcester Gazette, 27:1322 (15 August 1798). Reset.

Thomas's Massachusetts Spy, or Worcester Gazette, originally published as the Massachusetts Spy or, American Oracle of Liberty (est. 1775), was the creation of Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831), perhaps the most important printer of his era. Oyer 900 books alone are estimated to have come from his press, far more than Benjamin Franklin or any other contemporary printer. He was, moreover, a prolific and pioneering printer of almanacs, newspapers, magazines, journals, textbooks and music.

Thomas's patriotic credentials were impressive: he gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, published the first reports of the battles at Lexington and Concord, helped coordinate information on British troop movements with Paul Revere's cohort and published a patriotic Whig newspaper throughout the American Revolution.

When the British occupied Boston, Thomas moved his press to Worcester, Massachusetts, on 16 April 1775. British pressure and shortages of ink and paper forced brief cessations in 1776-8 and in 1786-8.

After the American Revolution, Thomas's newspaper supported the administration of George Washington and the Federalist cause. While circulation figures are unavailable, the Massachusetts Spy was one of the most widely read, quoted and reprinted of Federalist organs.

Thomas later authored The History of American Printing (1810), the foundation text for the history of American journalism, and founded the American Antiquarian Society (1812) with an endowment from the proceeds of his lucrative career.1
