The South was a backwater of the Gilded Age, despite all its bootstrap achievements in industrialization and agricultural reform. Because the nation organized to exploit more quickly and fully than it organized to conserve, the southern environment overall suffered far more than it gained from the achievements of the age. Yet no simple summary is possible of a time which in retrospect marked the beginning of a great and complex transformation for all Americans. The time of exploitation unlimited was also the time of innovation unprecedented. Tropical medicine, scientific forestry, wildlife conservation, and the engineering of rivers all implied drastic changes in environmental relations. But all represented beginnings only. Any unravelling of the fundamental southern enigma—disease and poverty and a declining resource base—would be a task for the future.
