The fall of Richard Nixon has been well told and there is no real need to replow those fields here, but for me, those twenty-six months were a blur of events that still seem unbelievable.

In the end, it would be the tapes of his own conversations that would do him in, and to Al Haig, who had been brought in to replace Haldeman as chief of staff, that was the great irony.

“Half the stuff on the tapes wasn’t true. It was just the false bravado of Nixon. He wanted to be one of the boys, a tough guy. A lot on the tapes was just that—bravado.”

Haig went on to become Ronald Reagan’s secretary of state and earned a lot of bad publicity when, after Reagan was shot, he declared that he was “in charge.” But I have always felt he deserved considerable credit for holding the presidency together during the final days of the Nixon White House, and he may have come to know Nixon better than any of those around him.

“Nixon feigned courage and bravado enough in his life that he finally developed it,” he told me one day.
