We also had a magician come in the evening and perform for the participants, as an unusual way to foster doubt while entertaining. Toward the end of this show, there was one trick that the magician repeated multiple times to show people exactly how he was doing it. As part of this trick, a sweeping motion made by his right hand drew people’s attention away from what his left hand was doing. His masterful sleight of hand offered a poignant and persuasive reminder of how our eyes—and brains—are constantly misleading us and causing us to distort reality. His various tricks and moves helped underscore our lessons about doubt and impress upon everyone that if they could shake themselves free of their old boxes and open up to changing their perceptions, they would then be able to look at things in dramatically new ways.
A few days later, we met again to build upon the output from the first session and to begin imagining the new online insurance site and its features. Participants started answering some of the above reframed questions and expanding on some of the headlines they had previously created in a “yes, and …” way to try to get to some very specific new possibilities. As it turned out, we ended up with more than 140 distinct ideas in total—the room was literally wallpapered with flip charts. We then grouped these ideas into fifteen themes, among them:
• Creating a community among our customers.
• Exploiting additional information for better pricing (for example, share information about your driving habits, so that if you are a safe driver you’ll get a discount).
• Building on the contributions/desires of our customers (for example, many of our seniors do art in their spare time—maybe we should sponsor art classes or exhibits).
• Creating product extensions and Web services that build on existing products.
• Offering mini-products and partnerships (for example, free movie tickets for the unemployed).
• Hosting an e-library (for example, an “internal Google”).
