Domino Thinking
I had a client who dealt in packaging. He was in contact with garbologists (yes, there is such a thing). He told me that there are two very different camps in garbology: those who think garbage is bad and all things should be recycled, and those who think recycling is not really the best option. I live on a tree-hugging island, so I was more fascinated with those who didnât agree with recycling than with those who promoted it. A few of the things I retained from that conversation were:
⢠The paper we recycle is okay, but no one questions whether the ink used for branding is biodegradable. Often, itâs not, and because this new paper breaks down so quickly, that ink gets into our ground and our water sources quickly.
⢠Humans like to wait until something hits a critical mass and then our creativity kicks in and we do something really amazing, like maybe actually using less in the first place, or repurposing âgarbageâ items into building supplies, or something like that. Recycling has slowed down the accumulation of garbage, thus slowing down our ingenuity.
Whether those issues are real or imagined, that conversation got me thinking about how we take such movements for granted because we think that smarter people than us are telling us that recycling is good. We forget or donât know that recycling is a gazillion-dollar industry. We donât think about things like being at the grocery store and putting a fresh chicken package in our cloth bag and then putting the bags on dirty counters and not washing the cloth bag often, or ever, and thus spreading germs.
What are you accepting as truth that needs to be questioned? This is important to think about. Not so long ago, we denied climate change and blindly threw everything out rather than reusing or recycling. Now are we blindly following the recycling movement?
Think about this: How does what you think about this situation apply in some way to your business? Come up with two ideas about what you take for granted.
