1. In this illustration, a neurite process (the tube at the top of the image) extends from the main cell body of a growing, healthy neuron. The amorphous, drop-like area at the end of the tube is called a growth cone, which is where structural proteins assemble to form a cell membrane.

2. Two principal proteins involved in growth cone function are actin and tubulin. In this magnified view of the illustration, tubulin proteins are shown as pill-shaped units. During normal cell growth, the tubulin proteins link together end-to-end to form microtubules that surround neurofibrils.
