With their few personal belongings in place, the first item she sat down to stitch was the quilt. She shed many tears as she worked on it, remembering all the happy times she had spent with her father. For the final square, she used the material from the skirt she had been wearing the day of the quake. She had washed it multiple times, but the ashes from the chimney wouldn’t come away. She didn’t like adding such a stained square to the quilt, but she knew that, like life, this quilt would not be as picturesque as she had intended when she had begun to stitch it all those years ago. In the corner, she embroidered “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. Psalm 147:3.”

Snipping off the end of the thread, she stroked the quilt and looked up at her husband, studying his strong jawline as he read over his work notes, and smiled. “Mr. Clayton, are you ready to go to prison with me?”

Giles crossed the room and swept her into an embrace, bolstering her in strength and courage. “I’ll go anywhere, as long as I’m with you.”
