4.2.2 One-Way Shape Memory Effect (OWSME) of Polycrystalline NiTi SMA

Although the one-way-shape memory effect (OWSME) and its cyclic degradation of single crystal NiTi SMA have been discussed in Sect. 4.2.1, such simulations cannot be directly used to investigate the thermo-mechanically coupled cyclic deformation of polycrystalline NiTi SMA due the lack of the constraint of grain boundary in the single crystal simulation system. That is, it is necessary to conduct a symmetric phase field simulation to the polycrystalline NiTi SMA by addressing its OWSME. Recently, Xu et al. [38] performed a detailed simulation to the OWSME and its grain-size dependence of polycrystalline NiTi SMA with nano-grains by using the newly proposed phase field model considering the effects of grain boundary and grain size, which is introduced as follows. It should be noted that similar to that used in the phase field simulations on the super-elasticity of polycrystalline NiTi SMA, a simplified 2D phase field model is employed here to simulate the OWSME of polycrystalline NiTi SMA by using a 2D simulation system with a sufficient number of grains at random crystallographic orientations.
