A Systematic Approach to Constructive Conflict Management
A similar approach known as GROW (goals, reality, options, and will) uses a carefully structured series of questions. David Whitaker employed this approach in coaching the Great Britain hockey team to Olympic gold and bronze, and Olympic gold medalist David Hemery has used it for coaching British hurdlers to world-class performance. It is also a popular tool in coaching executive teams, one I’ve often used myself.
Developed by Graham Alexander and popularized in 1992 by Sir John Whitmore, the GROW model structures coaching conversations along the four topics of goals, reality, options, and will by posing a set of questions for each category.19
