These efforts among contemporary avant-garde movements have succeeded to various degrees among various splinter groups. One common characteristic would be, however, that they all utilize social mechanisms of âworkshopsâ, conferences, symposia, festivals, New Music circles, composersâ organizations, grants-man-ship committees, activities that lead toward the refinement and normative enforcement of the new aesthetic. It would appear that the New Music is perhaps more rationalized in this sense than almost any previous music, including the music of the bourgeoisie.
Perhaps it is prophetic that Weber responded to Ostwaldâs thesis that the balance of energy, not the diversity of phenomena, represented the perfection of life by saying, âWhat a shame that what is art begins exactly where the point of view of the technician ends,â where, as it were, an evaluative and/or normative Sollen is superimposed on an empirically established Sein (1973:418). It is with this empirical generalization that the question of what is art, indeed, becomes a function of specific and determinable ingredients of social situations that add dimensions of Sollen (ethical obligations) to the Sein of existence. Claus Grimm (1979), without mentioning Weberâs work once, appears to reach a similar conclusion when he argues that the concept âartâ as ordinarily used by art historians has analytic powers only for the most recent two centuries of the history of the West. Art as a separate form of social expression occurs only in certain historical circumstances. Current sociology appears to be catching up with Max Weber.
