The only other event that occurred in the saloons was the sudden death of Pieder Gunderson, a Norwegian laborer, who dropped dead in the Mint Saloon one evening, apparently from chronic alcoholism.112 The saloon business didn’t seem to thrive in the small town that was quickly becoming family friendly. In 1909, Piercen moved his saloon and fixtures of the Northwestern to Oak Creek.113 Earlier that same year, Marcus Hight and George A. Moore had moved their saloon, the Mint, to Brooklyn outside Steamboat Springs.114 By 1913, the town only had one saloon, the Antlers bar, and the citizens and town trustees seemed quite content with that number and raised the saloon fee to $1,000 per year to make up the difference.115

There were also hotels such as the Antlers Hotel, the Monte Cristo and the Royal Hotel. The Antlers was one of the first hotels built by Thomas P. Lindsay in 1902.116 He later built another hotel, in 1906, on Moffat Avenue for a Mr. and Mrs. Greer, who promptly sold it to a Mrs. Strine, who named it the Royal Hotel.117 The Royal was one of the largest hotels in Routt County until the Cabin Hotel was built in Steamboat Springs. According to the authors of The Historical Guide to Routt County, there were a few shacks or cribs behind the Antlers bar that housed the town’s few soiled doves during the early days of the construction of the railroad. The construction of the railroad consisted of large numbers of hardworking crews, from graders to track layers, who looked for some relaxation during any off hours before they moved on toward the Oak Creek area and then on to Steamboat.118
