Traditional music

“Traditional music is a cornerstone of Irish culture, and central to it is the ‘session’.”

Traditional music is a cornerstone of Irish culture, and central to it is the ‘session’, in which a number of musicians get together to play tunes, typically in a pub. To the unsuspecting, this may seem like an informal arrangement. But don’t be deceived. The apparently casual behaviour of session musicians is in fact as highly regulated as that of ants.

Don’t be deceived either by the apparent inclusiveness of the group, which seems to welcome all newcomers and their instruments equally. The traditional session is a minefield of etiquette. If you are, for example, a guitar player, you might be advised to tread carefully. In some sessions, you might even be advised to tread on the guitar.

“Experienced players can tell a non-traditional tune just from its rhythm and feel – or sometimes from its smell.”
