The important thing for the SF writer to realize, in Gouldâs words, is that âHomo sapiens is an entity, not a tendency.â Nothing in natural history suggests that higher intelligence is the goal toward which evolution tends. Nothing in natural history suggests that intelligence must take the form of a primate who dreams, talks, reasons and feels just the way we do. Had the ratlike ancestor of primates died with many other species in the late Cretaceous, there would have been no human species â but there might someday have been some other organism that awoke to discover its own existence.
Every living species, including ours, is a unique product of contingency. No fact of natural history is more important as you set out to imagine the kinds of species that may populate other worlds.
