EXTRACTS FROM MY REPORT TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WRITERS IN EDUCATION ON WORK WITH FELPHAM COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN WEST SUSSEX
Do you draw on any particular theories when doing this work?
Not specifically, although inevitably my own experience working with other artists has developed how I work. I suppose over the years of working with young people and adults, I have formed my own theories. I believe firmly in the idea of allowing young people to draw their own conclusions from the experience, rather than telling them what to expect. I am a strong believer in the workshop model where writing, reading and listening are given equal weight and value. I feel strongly that there is no direct âcause and effectâ that can be measured from a residency and that it may be several years into an individualâs life when the value of the experience is truly felt. This is fine by me but it is sometimes harder to communicate to organisations or individuals driven by immediate outcomes. The more work of this kind I do, the more I also believe in the need for sustained, regular creative activity and the need to steer well away from the national curriculum.
