Chapter One: How Much can You Really Make as a Self-Published Author?

So, you want to write a book. Maybe it’s something you’ve dreamed about since you were a child, or maybe this is something that’s only just beginning to percolate in your mind. Whatever your reason for wanting to get started in the Indie publishing business, you need to know something: the information that exists about this business is vast, contradictory, and confusing.

I’m not kidding.

When I set out to begin my own career as an Indie writer and publisher, I, being a researcher by nature, set out to learn everything I could about the business. But I wasn’t too far into it before I realized that I would have to take everything I read with a grain of salt. Why? Because, for the most part, here’s what I found:

Self-professed publishing “gurus” who promise to reveal their “secrets” about how to make it big in this business. These people put on countless webinars disguised as educational presentations, but in the end only attempt to sell viewers products worth thousands of dollars that are, quite honestly, completely unnecessary. It’s my theory that these “gurus” make their money from selling their overinflated products and services, not from publishing books. What’s worse, their books are severely lacking in usable information.

Books full of hype. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever bought a book promising that if you only follow the author’s vague advice, you will strike it rich on the Kindle platform. It’s a nice thought, but a little later in this chapter we’ll talk about how much you can realistically expect to make publishing books. I’ll even break down those numbers according to how long the authors have been in business.

Blog posts from seemingly well-meaning people who give advice to “newbies” first starting out in the publishing business. Although I believe many of these people are well-intentioned, some of the advice I read is preposterous. In addition, this business changes
