He was acting like nothing had happened. They’d not spoken since she’d turned up and then left his house last month. He hadn’t even texted her to check how she was. This text appeared to suggest she could just snap back into it. She ignored the WhatsApp and shoved her phone into a locker.

The officer guided her to the cell, and another officer brought Emmett in.

Emmett sat down at the table and Rosa noticed that his right hand was slightly shaking. He removed it from the table and sat on it in an attempt to disguise his nerves. His eyes remained low, and he appeared to be biting his lip.

Rosa reached her hands across the table and placed them over Emmett’s left hand, which was clenched in a fist. He looked up and locked eyes with her.

‘I’m sorry I got so angry before. This is so scary. I honestly still don’t know if I made the right decision saying, “Not guilty”.’ His voice was shaking.

‘You did the right thing, Emmett. Apology accepted. Look, I want to help you. I really do.’

Emmett looked at her disbelievingly.

‘Emmett, I know you don’t want to discuss your friends, but they were with you in the park, could they give evidence on your behalf?’

‘No.’

‘We could talk to them. I know court is terrifying, but this really could make a difference in your case.’

‘I said no. I don’t want my friends involved.’

‘They’ll just be witnesses, Emmett.’

‘Look, I don’t want to get anyone else into trouble.’

‘Why are you protecting Tyrone and Jayden?’ Rosa knew that she needed to push him a little bit further. She hadn’t thought about how she would explain knowing their names, but she needed him to open up.

Emmett’s big brown eyes widened, and he rubbed them before a tear could escape. His jaw dropped slightly ajar before his eyes narrowed into a frown.

‘How the fuck do you know those names?’

‘Emmett, that’s not the main issue here. I need you to focus on answering my question. Why are you protecting them? Do they have something over you?’

Emmett’s expression remained perplexed.

‘I don’t understand. Have they spoken to the police or something? Did the police find them? How do you know their names?’ Emmett said, evidently panicking.

‘As far as I know, they haven’t spoken to the police,’ Rosa said calmly, trying to reassure him.

‘You didn’t get their names from me. Whatever happens, they need to know that!’ Emmett exclaimed.

‘Can I speak to them?’

‘NO! Are you crazy? Do you want me to die?’

A shiver ran down Rosa’s spine. Emmett was scared for his life.

‘Is there anything else you can tell me, Emmett? Anything at all that might help us help you?’

Emmett shook his head.

‘I didn’t tell you their names.’
