Chapter 26

GINNY

* * *

She'd tried on three different dresses, not liking the way each of them made her look bigger than she normally was.

The baby fat was still there. Ginny’s was a curvaceous body, but after having a baby the curves were a little too generous, a little too soft. She felt conscious of herself, especially given that Ryan was tall, and slim. And given the many pairs of admiring eyes that had settled over him that day at the school play.

Not that she was going to think of him like that. She was trying not to. It had been radio silence between them. She hadn’t seen or heard from him since the day at the park. So much for him being there for her night or day.

Whenever you need me. Whatever the hour. Call me.

She felt silly for having delusional and romantic thoughts about him, and now she wished she could have wormed her way out of attending Eloise’s housewarming, but she couldn’t. She had to go; she needed to show Ryan that she didn’t care. His cold shoulder treatment of her didn’t matter.

Settling for capri pants and a loose-fitting top, she threw on a long thick jacket over the baby carrier strapped to her chest, in which she carried Benjy. He was also wearing his warm winter clothes. Together, they set off for Eloise’s house, with Ashleigh pushing the pram. It would come in handy for when Benjy fell asleep but for now it helped to transport the food they were providing for the party.

Having Benjy strapped to her chest and facing outward, Ginny couldn't see his expression but she could tell from the way he kicked his legs that he was happy.

“Who are these people?” she asked as they approached Eloise’s place. Unfamiliar faces milled around outside, many with drinks and plates of food in their hands. The patio heater provided some warmth on a chilly day.

“You tell me,” Ashleigh mumbled. She was in a sour mood, and seemed to think the party was a chore instead of a social event. As they walked into the house, it was full of more people. So much for a ‘small’ housewarming. Ashleigh parked the pram discreetly in one corner.

They couldn’t help but notice the gargantuan feast spread out on the table inside. Eloise had obviously been cooking for days. She’d declined their offer of help, but Ginny and Ashleigh had baked a few quiches and made some coleslaw and potato salad.

“I don’t know any of these people,” Ginny murmured, casting a hurried glance around the room, scouring for Ryan. He wasn’t there.

“They’re mostly Liam's friends, I believe,” Ashleigh said. “Eloise is mixing in new circles these days.”

“Is Beth here?”

“No, but Darcie’s here and … oh, there’s Ford and … Kayla,” Ashleigh muttered. They were leaning against the countertop in the kitchen, talking. “Come and help me take the food into the kitchen,” Ashleigh said, lifting out the food containers from the pram.

“I’ve got Benjy!”

“Just come with me,” Ashleigh hissed.

“I can’t carry anything.
