Pay Attention!

Being intentional also means to pay attention! How many times do we drive somewhere and realize when we get there, that we operated essentially on autopilot? Our brains are wired to follow habitual patterns, so sometimes we have to fight our brain to take intentional action that might be different than our typical pattern.

My mom taught me that pain is the body’s way of warning you of something wrong. Don’t ignore it. Listen! Diligently listening to your body is part of being intentional about your health. If you have pain, figure out why. I’ve never embraced taking painkillers as they mask the pain, risking possible further injury. And they all have side effects. Even the “wonder drug” aspirin, has side effects by affecting the stomach lining.

Recently, I experienced pain in my upper left chest. Initially, I thought it was a by-product of my recent rotator cuff surgery. I ignored it at first, because I had no other symptoms, but the pain persisted. My mom’s voice, in my head, reminded me of what she had always taught me. So, I figured I should get it checked out by a cardiologist. The EKG came back fine. The cardiologist agreed that it probably had something to do with the shoulder. We then decided that as a precaution, I should take a stress test. As a cardio junkie, I had no worries. No way I could have an issue with blockage. Bring it!

The stress test changed everything. It showed 90 percent blockage in one of the arteries. Again, a diagnosis knocked the wind out of me. A stream of questions and worries streamed through my head. Why me? What did I do wrong? I thought my commitment to cardio would have prevented any issues with blockage. I survived cancer, now this? Again, the thoughts of what would happen to me came flooding back. How would this impact my life long-term?

The doctor insisted I have the stents put in immediately. Panic set in. My wife immediately flew home from her business trip. Two stents later, all is good. Be intentional with your health and the signals your body gives you. If I had not been paying attention, I might not be here.
