“Please Use Words”

I finally got a date with a girl that I was crazy about. She was the one that I had written “Packin My Heart” for, which became my first non-novelty song. We had arranged to meet for lunch and she brought her girlfriend along because the girl that I liked had laryngitis that day and could not talk at all. Can you imagine how frustrating that was for me, there were so many things I wanted to say to her, but she just couldn’t talk. Her girlfriend could tell I really liked her girlfriend, the one who could talk, was the one I had to talk to during lunch. She was very sassy and uppity. She knew she had the power and swung it over me, like the Sword of Damocles. It was one of the lunches you never forget. I wanted to say to my friend at the end of lunch, excuse me, while I strangle your girlfriend for a moment.

About a year before that lunch, a friend of mine Mike Stevens, knocked on my door one afternoon and when I opened the door he was standing there in a catatonic state, like a zombie. I looked at him and realized something was wrong with him because he was usually so chatty and the look on his face said that he was traumatized by something and frozen with fear. So after about a minute I said to him, USE WORDS and it cracked him up and he started to talk. He told me he was just in a car accident. So when I had lunch with Suzanna and her laryngitis, I wrote the poem for her “Please Use Words.”
