It was a cold February morning and Reverend Van Veen stumbled through the liturgy. He raced through his sermon and went straight to the congregational prayer.

“Heavenly Father,

In this season of cold and darkness, we cry out for your provision. We ask for strength and wisdom. Lord, provider of all goodness, we drink from your well and thirst no more. Even in our depraved condition, you’ve shown us by your holy word how to bring water to those in need.”

Because I’d lost some of my faith when Mama died (why did God take my mother?), I always kept my eyes open—to see who else might have doubts. With each year of the occupation, our numbers grew. We were a secret club unto ourselves. I glanced around. Many of the elders were nodding. Depravity was one of their favourite catechism themes. But what I liked about the reverend’s prayer was that despite the evil in the world, we can bring water. At least bring water. A few of the open-eyed congregants liked this idea, too. One man had tears in his eyes. But Van Veen wasn’t done yet. What he’d missed in his sermon, he was making up for in his prayer.

“… Lord, give us courage to open our doors to the stranger. Quiet our fears of scarcity so that our only fear is of you. God, give us convictions when what is right and what is demanded are not the same thing. Let the world call us fools, that we may be righteous in your sight.”
