He wanted to get Chloe something special.

Robert narrowed his eyes studiously over the glass counter in the jewelry department, unsure of which trinket to purchase for his new dame. Something nice yet durable. But everything here was really gaudy and that, she was not.

“Do you have any with turquoise?” he asked the salesman.

“Yes, sir, we do. I’ll go retrieve the box.” The salesman wandered off whistling.

Robert returned to browsing at all the awful necklaces in the case. He shouldn’t bother wasting his time. They were all ugly and he’d never want to see her wearing any of them.

He stretched his neck, searching for her. She was somewhere out there shopping and would no doubt be looking for him soon. If only the salesman would get a move on.

“Sir.” The man cleared his throat and showed Robert a smaller wooden case with an array of silver and turquoise necklaces. “They’re all affordable as well, to suit your specific needs.”

“This one.” Robert pointed at a fine chain of silver medallions with bits of turquoise and threaded slivers of red beads. “It’s perfect. Will you package it right away? She could be anywhere close.”

The salesman nodded happily. “Absolutely, right away, sir. She’ll be delighted by your terrific choice.” And off he hustled to finish the transaction at the register.

Robert slipped the small package in his pocket and found Chloe browsing at the perfume counter. He sized her up from behind, in her floral print blouse and form-fitting skirt, she looked good enough to eat today. “Find something you like?” he asked sweetly.

She shook her head and set the bottle back down. “They’re out of my favorite scent until next week.”

“What a shame. Ready to go?”

“O’Reillys?”

“Sure.”

The cafe was the same one they always went to these days. Close to the house, the box-sized building had patio seating under a cluster of maples. The spot was cozy and private with not too many people usually. It was here that Robert gave Chloe her gift.

“It’s beautiful,” she said, aweing at the decoration around her neck. “And to think I didn’t know this is what you were up to!”

“I’m glad you like it,” he responded, satisfied at how the silver complemented the olive in her skin. “It’ll look nice with your bathing suit.”

Chloe’s smile faded. “Actually, we need to talk about going to Seaside.”

He already didn’t like where this was going. “Did you find Frankie a sitter?”

“It just isn’t the time for me to be going off on trips,” she said, frowning. “Vonda’s too sick to just leave Frankie at home with them and Mina is taking time off.”

“What about the Stewart’s?”

“I—can’t.” She held his hand.

“So, did you ask them or not?”

“They’ll be out of town.”

“Then we’ll take her with us. It won’t be too much trouble to modify the arrangements.”

But she only shook her head, taking a moment to sip her coffee before continuing. “I know you really would like to go, and I’d like to as well. But the truth is that Vonda’s condition is very delicate and she needs my help.
