Videophilia

Nature Substitute Is—No Substitute!

CHICAGO

So the video game Grand Theft Auto IV has had a record rollout, selling more than $300 million on the first day of release. But if you ask a parent, you’ll hear that kids are spending too much time with video games—not to mention televisions, movies, the Internet, and the tiny screens on their phones and MP3 players. Although many people worry that playing violent video games will spawn violent behavior, it’s hard to prove exactly how these activities harm kids.

But could the glut of video entertainment estrange people from the environment? Yes, according to a new study showing that the rate of visits to national parks fell during the same period that the use of electronic diversions has soared.

The total number of visitors to U.S. national parks peaked in the 1990s, but on a per-capita basis, visitation has been declining since 1988. University of Illinois conservation biologist Oliver Pergams and colleague Patricia Zaradic de-cided to test a possible link between electronic diversions and this decline.
