WHAT IF YOU ARE LOSING TOO MUCH WEIGHT?
Some people on the Wahls Diet, Wahls Paleo, or Wahls Paleo Plus, while enjoying great benefits, lose too much weight. The appetite-suppressing effects of the diets coupled with low-carbohydrate intake can cause this to happen, especially in people who already tend to be on the thin side. If you or your doctor feel that you are losing too much weight, it is fine to reintroduce more carbohydrates by eating more fruits and starchy vegetables, even at the Wahls Paleo Plus level, in amounts that stall weight loss or even help you to gain some weight back. Add a few fruits or starchy vegetables at a time until your weight stabilizes. It’s okay to go out of nutritional ketosis temporarily in order to reach a healthy weight. I highly recommend making Wahls Fudge (see the recipe at the end of this book) and eating as much of it as you like until you get back up to a healthy weight. Continue to eat it at the quantity you need to maintain your weight. Again, if this takes you out of ketosis, that is fine. We don’t want you underweight. Once your weight has stabilized, you can reduce the amount of fudge you’re eating to get back into ketosis as long as you maintain your weight. Our study patients who have lost more weight than we wanted have all found this to be a very effective and tasty way to maintain a desired weight. This fudge is delicious and energy-dense, but still fits into the parameters of the Wahls Protocol. It is also a terrific end-of-the-meal treat to serve to your guests and still be completely compliant with the Wahls Protocol. Eat fudge! (How’s that for a prescription?)
