At the time, such a mission was well beyond our technical capacity, and Kennedy knew it. There was no clear-cut how in sight. But he knew that vision doesn’t come from capacity; capacity flows from vision. And on July 20, 1969, eight years and two months after JFK’s historic speech, Neil Armstrong became the first human being to set foot on the moon’s surface. It’s the same with every great accomplishment, whether of nations or individuals: the image comes first.
Vision and Health
Since the 1980s there has been an explosion of interest in the mind-body connection. During the 1970s and 1980s, an oncologist named Dr. O. Carl Simonton developed a radical model of emotional support for the treatment of cancer patients. Simonton’s thesis was that one’s state of mind could have a significant influence on one’s ability to survive cancer. In 1978 he published the enormously popular Getting Well Again, written with his wife Stephanie Matthews-Simonton.
A year later, in his landmark book Anatomy of an Illness, the political journalist Norman Cousins described his own recovery from a life-threatening illness 2 using a regimen that included rest, vitamin C, and laughter. These two books helped launch a revolution in mind–body medicine—a revolution based on the idea that the image we hold in our minds has a very real impact on the state of our physical bodies.
Today, it’s reported that some ten million Americans say they use some form of imagery or meditation to reduce stress, boost the immune system, and cope with life-threatening illnesses. According to the Cleveland Clinic, more than two hundred research studies in the past thirty years have explored the role of mind–body techniques in helping prepare people for surgical and medical procedures, and helping them recover more rapidly. 3 Documented benefits of guided imagery include:
Reduced stress and anxiety, and enhanced sleep
Dramatically decreased pain and narcotic consumption
Decrease in blood pressure and headaches
Decrease in blood sugar in diabetics
Decreased side effects and complications of medical procedures, shortened recovery time, shorter hospital stays, and reduced hospital costs
Stronger immune system and enhanced ability to heal
Improved results in pregnancy, from conception through labor and delivery
Decrease in pulmonary symptoms (asthma, allergies, emphysema, and so on)
Better coping with losses (death, divorce, job loss, and so on)
Helping children and teens cope with daily stresses (friendships, school, tests, and so on)
Improvement in learning disabilities
Improvement in post-traumatic stress syndrome
Aid in weight loss and/or smoking cessation
Increased self-confidence and sense of general wellness, and improved quality of life
