Cheerful U.S. Marines embark on the journey home from South Vietnam in March 1971. About 150,000 U.S. soldiers were left in Vietnam by that year’s end.

There was, however, diplomatic progress on the wider world stage. President Nixon had undertaken a bold initiative to improve relations between the United States and the two major communist powers, China and the Soviet Union. In February 1972, Nixon became the first U.S. president to visit communist China. North Vietnam depended on these two communist powers for arms supplies and diplomatic support, and if they grew more friendly with the United States, North Vietnam risked being isolated. This risk probably influenced North Vietnam’s decision to take a military gamble.
