Chapter 16

All Hunter knew at the moment, was he wanted to break something. Preferably Luke Stonewall’s face. Sure, it had been pleasurable to see him squirm this morning on the front steps of the old Lovell ranch with his attorneys in tow. But right now, nothing would have made him happier than to give him a good beatdown.

Clearly shaken, Summer backed away from him. “I have to leave.”

Hunter held Luke’s gaze for a second.

Luke shook his head, actually looking somewhat remorseful. “I’m sorry.”

Hunter refrained from slugging the guy, even though he did owe him from the other day.

When he turned around, she was gone. Hunter rushed through the crowd, searching for her. It was like she’d completely disappeared.

He heard a whistle and looked up to the roof. Cooper and Sterling were both pointing toward the parking lot. Taking off, he gave them a thumbs-up.

When he got there, she was out of breath and stomping her foot.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he approached.

She shook her head, and he thought about how beautiful she looked in the moonlight with her skirt and red cowboy boots. “Chloe’s brother left.” She sighed, looking at her phone. “Texted me that he hooked up with someone and took off.”

As Hunter saw all the vulnerability on her face, he knew he wanted to be the person whose number she pressed when she needed something. “I’ll take you home.”

Hesitating, she blinked. “No, I’ll call Chloe.”

He moved toward his truck. “C’mon, let a neighbor help out a friend.” Happy she came along, he tried not to give her too much attention. She didn’t seem to like it. Plus, she’d just dealt with Jerkface. But Hunter did open her door for her.

He didn’t press her to talk during the ten-minute ride back to the ranch, but all he could think about was the envelope in her hands she kept turning over and over.

When they got to her place, she surprised him. “Would you like to sit on the deck for a bit?”

Completely off balance at her invitation, he nodded. “I’d like that.”

They walked to her porch, and she unlocked the door and went in, holding the screen for him. “Let’s go to the back deck.”

He followed, completely in the dark for a second.

She rushed ahead and flipped on the kitchen light. “Go ahead and go out. I’ll get us some water.”

He nodded, still a little uncertain. Usually, he had one or two dates, and then it was over. He was in uncharted waters, but all he knew was that all he wanted was to get to know this woman better.

Unlatching the sliding deck door, he noticed it stuck when he opened it. Then he realized the deck needed some work too, since it felt like it was shifting beneath him. He felt back for the light switch and couldn’t find one.

“Don’t worry about it. It doesn’t work.” She spoke softly behind him as she came out and handed him a water bottle. In her other hand, she held a small candle in a glass jar and a lighter.
