Chapter Seven

Lead with Confidence

One night while working patrol, we received a 911 call about a woman screaming for help in the middle of the street. All units immediately responded due to the urgent nature of the situation. When we arrived at the scene, I got out of my cruiser and searched the area but couldn’t find her. It was a ghost town. No screaming. No woman. Nothing.

I looked at the other officers who had been searching for the woman as well, but none of them had an answer. She was nowhere to be found.

We were all standing outside of our cruisers trying to figure out what was going on, when suddenly we heard a woman’s voice desperately yell, “HELP!” But the cry came from above us. I looked up and saw a woman looking down at me from a small apartment window, which was located above a convenience store. I could see her face and how terrified she was, even though it was dark. We quickly moved closer to the window and I yelled up to her.

“Are you okay?”

Through her crying, she managed to reply. “No, I’m not okay. My boyfriend is drunk and he’s beating the shit out of me, but he won’t let me leave.”

“Okay, hold on,” I said. “We’re coming right up—”

Her face became even more terrified.

“No, don’t!” she said, cutting me off abruptly. “Don’t come up here! Please stay away! He has a knife, and if you come in, he’ll fucking kill me.”

These are the situations that you fear most as a police officer. You have a victim who is in imminent danger, but you can’t get to her. And if you try to do something, your actions might result in her being hurt or even killed. Cop or not, that’s something no one wants to live with. I was the sergeant in charge that night, and all my officers were looking to me for the next move. I had to make a decision.

I didn’t want to risk having the woman get hurt, but I knew we couldn’t wait. It was only a matter of time before her boyfriend made his way back to the bedroom she was hiding in and continued his assault. Knowing the suspect was drunk, I thought it might be easy to distract him. Based on that assumption, I had one of the officers go to the back of the building and start flashing his light into a window. I instructed the victim to let me know as soon as her boyfriend went to check out what the light was. The window was at the opposite end of where her bedroom was located, so I thought that would give us the best chance to get to her before her boyfriend did.

The other officers and I quietly made our way up the stairs to the apartment entrance and waited for the victim’s cue to break down the door. My guys were itching to get inside, but knowing that the suspect was on the other side of the door with a knife, I told them that I wanted to go first.
