Chapter 4 – Snoring Treatments

Whichever partner has the snoring problems there are a multitude of tips and preventative measures that can be tried.

Natural home remedies

- Buy extra pillows so that the snorer can prop themselves up rather than lying flat on their back. This will prevent the tissues in the throat from 0bstructing the air passages.

- Sleep on your side, whilst there is no guarantee of the snorer staying in this position, starting with your arms wrapped around the pillow may just work.

- Sew a tennis ball into the pyjama top. This way if the snorer moves to sleep on their back the tennis ball will prompt them back to sleeping on their side.

- If your snoring is caused by nasal congestion, take an antihistamine or decongestant before bedtime.

- Use nasal strips to tape your nose open. Follow the directions on the packet and the nasal strips will lift and open nostrils to increase the airflow.

- Use a peppermint mouthwash and gargle prior to bedtime. This will cause the lining of the nose and throat to shrink. This is particularly beneficial if your snoring is temporary and caused by a head cold or allergy.

- Although it may sound extreme a neck brace could be the answer. This works by keeping the chin extended so that the throat cannot bend and the airways stay open.

- Reduce the allergens in your bedroom to alleviate nasal problems that could be caused by dust, mold etc.

- Avoid eating a heavy meal and drinking alcohol for up to 3 hours before bedtime. Both cause the throat muscles to over relax and this will cause the snoring.

- Lose weight, by losing 10% of your body weight the upper airway is less likely to constrict.

- Stop smoking as the smoke from tobacco irritates the mucus membrane causing the throat to swell and airway to narrow. Nasal congestion is also a common problem amongst smokers.

- If you take regular medication, talk to your doctor as some drugs can make snoring worse.

Snoring self – defense

If you are living with a snorer there is a real chance that restless nights are beginning to threaten your relationship. Keep in your mind that there are thousands of spouses and partners that have dealt with this problem and survived.

Before running to the hills and deciding the time has come to live alone, consider these practical methods which could help you to deal with the rumblings if your loveable mate.

- Earplugs are inexpensive, easy to use and really comfortable when you have got used to them, Foam earplugs are an excellent choice as they mold to the shape of your ears.

- Consider a white noise machine, this machine can make nights so much more bearable. This electronic device produces a consistent sound that muffles all other noises.

- Go to bed well before your snoring spouse, this way you will at least have a head start on a good night’s sleep!
