Exercise

Having beaten the diet horse practically to death, I’m now going to write just a few words about exercise. I won’t bore you with all the studies that have shown that people who exercise regularly live longer, healthier lives than couch potatoes. You already know that. We all know that, but most of us don’t act on that knowledge. I do, but not just to be healthier physically. I find that the greatest benefits of regular exercise are mental and emotional. It’s the best stress reliever around. I tell my patients that if I didn’t exercise, I would probably be in either our local psychiatric hospital or our local prison. There are few guarantees in life other than death and taxes, but I can guarantee you that if you exercise regularly, you will feel better. You’ll also look better, although that’s less important.

The current recommendations are that you accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. An example of moderate exercise is walking at three miles an hour. It’s okay to cram those 150 minutes in over the weekend, if you work full time and can’t find the time to squeeze in a workout between your job, your family, and your other responsibilities. But you have to set aside the time and let nothing short of a catastrophe interfere. Rather than a pill to treat cholesterol, what I’d really love to be able to prescribe is a pill that made people crave exercise.
