Chapter Seventeen

"You know, if you would write down your ideas instead of simply creating them and walking away, you would do the world and yourself a great favor." Sitting on the library table, biding time while they waited for their appointment with the solicitor, Felicity shuffled through Ewen's drawings. She could tell he had just created this stack last night. She could feel the fervency still on them. She lifted one sketch to the light and wrinkled her nose as she attempted to discern what it meant.

"You sound like Drogo." Lying on his back on the cold hearth, Ewen finished banging the breastplate from an old suit of armor to fit the chimney and adjust its angle.

Soot covered him from head to toe, yet Felicity couldn't help but admire the flat abdomen and long legs protruding from the depths of the fireplace. Stockings and tight breeches clung to muscled calves and narrow hips, and it was all she could do to breathe while just looking at them.

She'd not thought of physical things like men's hips until she'd seen the naked pictures in that book last night. She'd not imagined how Ewen's legs might feel against hers until she'd studied the drawings. Now she couldn't stop thinking of them. She'd spent her life avoiding touching people, but now she craved the opportunity to touch this man all over.

He was making it rather clear that he didn't share her desire. Or perhaps, like her, he was unnerved by what they'd done and needed time to ponder all the aspects of their predicament. Pounding on metal seemed an unlikely but particularly male means of thinking.

"I've always thought your brother a very smart man," she declared, returning the drawings to the table.

"Bookish," Ewen retorted, his voice muffled with his head up the chimney. "And you're avoiding the question at hand."

So she was. She shuffled the papers some more, but no clue to Ewen's thoughts was on them. "I fail to see how we could keep something like a divorce quiet. Would it cost a lot of money? How does one go about it?"

"I'll have to ask the solicitor." Ewen popped out from the chimney. "Or would you prefer to tell your father and let him handle the matter?"

"By lopping off both our heads? He sent me away to protect me. He won't thank either of us for undermining his efforts," she said wryly. "I'd rather resist until there is no other choice. May I go into the city with you? I'd like to see more of Lord Nesbitt's library."

"You don't think we've found enough trouble in there?" Sitting up, he brushed futilely at the soot covering his shirt and breeches. "I'll ask him if he has catalogued the volumes. Let's see if he has Malcolm journals first."

"I'd still like to go with you," she said stubbornly. "I want to know more about the other investors in your canal. I cannot believe you're responsible for the failure of that lock."

Ewen scowled, but she could not fear a man with soot on his nose.
