Pistis

In the second subsection, pistis, “place the things of which these are images—the animals around us, all the plants, and the whole class of artifacts” (510a). Whereas the eristic arguments of Book 1 illustrated the way we sometimes investigate matters by looking only at what is said about them, rather than at the phenomena themselves, Books 2—4 were an investigation of justice by looking at physical entities, cities, in which it could be observed. When Socrates says to place in this category the animals around us, plants, and artifacts, he does not say that these are the only things that belong in it. Rocks would certainly belong as well, as would we ourselves insofar as we are visible bodies, and so would our actions and communities. Otherwise, when Socrates says that the lower division of the line is a visible image of the intelligible realm, it could not include visible images of the most important forms, like justice and wisdom—the outward signs of virtuous character, as at 402c—d.
