My most raw fear is for her safety and well-being. I fear the intolerance that I am seeing in the world and I guess, even though I strongly believe—and all the research is coming out now to say affirmation is the best parenting path—there are always the people who call me late at night or drop emails in my box or hand-delivered letters in my mailbox that say, “You will be responsible if there is a terrible outcome,” like “if somebody harms your kid or if your kid harms herself, it will be on your head because you didn’t discourage them from this path.” And I guess there’s just always that little nagging feeling of, you know, is there a better way of supporting, am I missing anything, is this the best that I can do in terms of assuring her confidence, all my kids’ confidence, that they absolutely have the right to be whatever they are and absolutely have the right to engage with the world in a fair or more equitable way? Sometimes there are days when the outside world feels like it has so much more power than I do.
