The rumour that the magazine was on fire and that a second explosion was imminent spread rapidly and resulted in a further wave of terror and panic throughout the city. The story was, however, completely untrue. The facts were that any danger was averted by the prompt action of the soldiers of the 72nd Ottawa Battalion guarding the magazine, under the command of Lieutenant Olmstead, working alongside companies of sailors from the ships in the harbour. Much of the ammunition in store was carried away and stacked in a place of safety and as an extra precaution the remainder, together with the interior of the magazine, was thoroughly soaked with water.
