In what would become a symbol of the young Lord of Wiltun’s rule, the atmosphere in his hall was much less formal than it was during his father’s time, something that all the celebrants noted, and about which most approved. They would have been surprised, almost shocked to learn that this lightheartedness was at the behest not of Lord Eadward, but of the Lady Leofe, and her son had been somewhat reluctant to agree.

“God and His Saints know how much I loved your father,” she had told Eadward the day before the feast. “Although,” she added with a rueful smile, “that wasn’t always the case. In fact,” the memory made her laugh, which Eadward was happy to see, “I didn’t speak to my father for six months after I learned that he had betrothed me to Eadwig. When we met, I thought he was so... dreary . And,” now Eadward saw the more familiar sight of tears, “that he was boring. But that’s not what it was.” She shook her head, and in the light, Eadward caught a glimpse of his mother as he remembered her from his childhood, a glamorous, gay figure who liked to laugh and was always willing to play games with her firstborn child. “Your father just was aware of the responsibilities that fell on his shoulders before he was really ready because of the death of his father. It wasn’t that he didn’t like fun, it was just that he was afraid that while he was busy enjoying himself, he would miss something important.” She had turned to give Eadward a direct look then. “I don’t want that for you, my son. I think that you can enjoy life and still attend to your duties, and your first Yule feast is a good place to start. Although,” she finished tartly, “you’d enjoy it more if you had a wife.”

Eadward, as he always did when his mother broached the topic of marriage, which had become a daily occurrence with his father gone, simply sighed and said, “Yes, Mother.” More seriously, he assured her, “And I will make sure that I have a good time tomorrow night and be approachable.”

“Who knows?” his mother had added just as she swept from the hall to head to the kitchen building. “You might meet someone...interesting.”

Now, as the hall began filling up, Eadward noticed several strange faces, all of them clad in the attire of fellow nobility, but it was the fact that they were universally one half of pairs of man and woman, or girl, and the man was always substantially older than his female companion that made him realize he should have been paying closer attention to his mother’s seemingly offhand remark about meeting someone. However, an even greater shock was coming, though that would not be for a bit longer, and at this moment, he joined his mother at the entrance, ready to make the traditional greeting and welcome to all of those who owed the Lord of Wiltun fealty, receiving the protection due them in exchange.
