8 Where to Stay

It is generally acknowledged by all travellers in England that they have been most agreeably surprised with the elegance of inns throughout the kingdom. The sleeping beds and rooms are uncommonly neat: it is true, beds are that sort of luxury among the English which are always carefully attended to.

Christian Goede (1807)1

Where are you going to spend the night? The obvious answer is an inn. These are quite numerous: you will see them throughout the country, and they are widely praised by travellers, especially in England. But they are not your only option. Increasingly you will find hotels catering to the wealthy. Private houses and furnished rooms are available for rent in all the principal tourist attractions, such as the seaside resorts, cathedral cities and picturesque places in the Lake District. What’s more, you are bound to make friends on your visit, perhaps with the owners of country houses and even aristocrats. Maybe you will join them for a shooting party or a ball. Or perhaps you will find yourself in an industrial town going home with someone from a very different walk of life – perhaps after a few too many beers in the pub. And what if you find yourself with no money, looking for a cheap boarding house in somewhere like London or Liverpool? This chapter will give you a glimpse of the vast range of places you might stay in Regency Britain, whether you are destined to sleep in squalor or slumber in splendour.
