Kevin

Kevin slipped quietly down the steps and out the front door without bumping into Charlotte again, or any of the children. He pulled the door shut, whistling softly beneath his breath. If the rest of the mission went as smoothly as the first three minutes, he’d soon have James Cullen out of the cave and tucked into bed for the night.

If? What a joke. When the brooches were involved, adventures quickly spiraled out of control. What scared Kevin most was that the downhill spiral of this brooch adventure, when compared to the others, seemed to be getting steeper and weirder.

He hustled down the walk toward the barn with a flashlight illuminating the trail in front of him. He hoped he wouldn’t have to come up with an explanation for the light. Not tonight, anyway. There were more pressing problems.

Was his course of action the right one? What were the consequences of leaving Charlotte alone to manage the sick and injured? Could someone interpret his abandonment as a violation of the EMT Code of Ethics to conserve life, alleviate suffering, and promote health?

What about his brother? He couldn’t leave Charlotte without backup, but he couldn’t leave James Cullen, either.

The clouds scudded across the dark sky, and for an instant, the moon peeked through the cracks. That wedge of light was all he needed for clarity. What made him think the rescue had to include him? Just because Kenzie thought it was a good idea didn’t mean it was the best idea. He bottom-lined the situation: All he had to do was point a search team in the right direction. Then he could get back to doing what he was trained to do.

In a perfect world, he should be the one to find his brother, but there was nothing perfect in any world, past, present, or future.

He hurried toward the barn to find a security guard to take a message to David and Meredith, and to send a search team to the cave. It also occurred to him that as soon as James Cullen was located, the family could return to the future, and he’d be free to join JL in San Francisco.

A win-win for everyone.

When he arrived at the barn, it had a dark, lonely look about it. The win-win didn’t seem so likely now. As with all barns he’d spent time in, it smelled of horse, hay, leather and ointment, as well as dust, dirt, manure and sweat. This barn, though, ruined nature’s perfume with the overpowering stink of burned coffee. He wrinkled his nose. He had a four-cup-a-day habit, but the stink of burned coffee always triggered the temptation to quit.

He found lanterns and a paper box of Diamond matches on a shelf near the door. When he struck a stick match, the smell of sulfur overpowered the smell of the coffee. He lit two lanterns, one to carry, one to leave on the shelf. He turned off the flashlight and packed it away inside his jacket. The lantern flames cast broad circles of light in the cold darkness.
