PART FOUR

1955

“They ain’t found it out yet, but Daley’s the dog with the big nuts.”

Alderman Paddy Bauler

WITH MCCARTHY gone from the scene, Eisenhower’s looser attitude unleashed profound change: rock and roll, car culture, fast food, and skyscrapers; centerfolds and improv theater. Richard J. Daley ran for mayor of Chicago not as an expert but as the most “regular” guy in a city full of them. His election signaled a choice by whites to embrace the Machine in exchange for leadership and security in a world changing way too fast for them. As Chicago began its program to contain its black population, a teenage boy from the South Side was murdered in Mississippi. His mother’s brave choice to show the world her son’s battered body catalyzed the modern civil rights movement.
