weakly and pointed towards the sticky liquid that was spreading up my sock.

'Oh my God,' said my mother, bending down and looking at it. 'What's happened? What is this? Give me your foot. Let's get your plimsoll off. Oh God! Tony! Look at her foot!'

My foot had turned septic. Green pus was oozing out of the wound and my foot was covered in what looked like thin, stinking yellow gravy. My father carried me over to the obligatory St John Ambulance volunteer, a bald man with tiny teeth. I was sweating and close to fainting.

'This wound's infected,' said the volunteer, having given me an examination. 'All I can do is clean it up and dress it. But she'll need antibiotics and bed rest till it's healed.'

As we returned to the campsite, we discovered that the boys, who had been asked to leave by the campsite owner, had not gone without a parting shot. They'd let our tent down and tipped the contents of the bucket all over it. It was the end of another shitty holiday. Literally.
