6.5 Soft Skills Training

LSS professionals are in demand as companies want to reduce their costs and enhance their profit potential. LSS practitioners should have the knowledge to reduce waste and variation to make optimum use of available resources. In addition to their statistical and process knowledge, they should have the essential soft skills to work with cross-functional teams from across the organisation. These skills include positive attitude, leadership skills, communication skills, business process understanding and management skills (Brown, 2015).

Positive attitude. A positive attitude is a must for an efficient LSS practitioner. In addition, they must be a firm believer that they can achieve the tasks and goals of the project. Moreover, LSS practitioners should be a role model for their team members and support motivation among team members. LSS practitioners should provide assistance or training to team members who experience difficulty in understanding certain tools or concepts (Brown, 2015).

Leadership skills. One of the crucial characteristics of a LSS practitioner is leadership skills. LSS practitioners must be able to manage a diverse project team and encourage members to work to their potential (Brown, 2015).

Communication skills. Without clear and consistent communication, objectives cannot be accomplished. LSS practitioners should have excellent communication skills in order to effectively convey information to team members as well as top officials in a clear and understandable manner. In addition to strong oral communication skills, LSS practitioners must also possess good writing and presentation skills to be able to communicate project status, which is shared with team members, MBBs, Champions, as well as other stakeholders (Brown, 2015).

Business process understanding. It is important for LSS practitioners to understand all the aspects of the business process in order to take a systems perspective and deliver results. This will also help them to identify the opportunities for improvement in the business processes, which often crosses multiple business functions, and develop effective action plans that benefit all areas. This systems view enables the LSS practitioner to improve the business process and enabling the team to provide efficient and timely results (Brown, 2015).

Management skills. An LSS practitioner needs to be organised as they must balance time, resources and budgets. During regular reviews with the team and Champion, the LSS practitioner will provide updates on where the project currently is with respect to schedule, budget and resources. If there are any discrepancies in these areas, the LSS practitioner must report the issue and convey information to the appropriate decision-maker, which is often the Champion or stakeholder. By providing timely updates, they can obtain feedback and make necessary adjustments quickly to get the project back on track. In other words, they should be able to manage the project and team in an efficient manner (Brown, 2015).
