Hezekiah died and was succeeded by his wicked son Manasseh who reigned for fifty-five years. He rebuilt the high places and erected altars to Baal. He placed pagan altars in the Temple of Solomon and in the royal palace. He sacrificed his son in the fire to Moloch and dealt with wizards, enchanters, and diviners. And he filled Jerusalem with the innocent blood he spilled. The Lord was angered and compared the wickedness of Israel to that of all the nations He had guided them to conquer since the Exodus. And He swore to bring vengeance upon the land.

Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle. And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down. (2 Kings 21:12–13)
