Chapter 11

The sky in the east was just starting to show streaks of light when Jalad reached the warehouse. He was just moving up to the side door of his safe haven when something told him to wait. Maybe it was a noise, or some sort of sixth sense. He wasn’t sure what made him stop, but the hair on the back of his neck was standing up. He ducked around the corner of the building on the river’s side. Standing there straining his ears to hear some noise that would tell him what was wrong. He waited patiently.

He waited less than a minute before he saw them coming. There were ten or more men moving along the docks. They were searching for him no doubt, going from warehouse to warehouse. Jalad slid down the bank and ducked under the dock. From there he could see them working their way toward his warehouse. He slid silently into the water and dog paddled out to the end of the dock. He wrapped his arms and legs around the last pillar and edged his way down to the water level. With his face upturned, he could stay this way with his nose and mouth just above the water line and still be able to see what was going on.

Once the men reached the warehouse they divided into two groups. They had rehearsed this routine, each man knew what to do. One group went through the back door followed immediately by the other group that went through the side door. Nearly all of the warehouses along the river were built alike. It didn’t appear that they knew he had been staying there. They were going through all the buildings. They must have the city blanketed. The building was empty. It didn’t take them long to search it. They were back out in minutes.

“Did your team find anything?” One man hollered to the group coming out the side door.

“Nothing, sarg.” Was the reply. “Good”, he thought to himself. He had been worried that they might find the black robe. He had stuffed it between two stacks of coiled rope prior to leaving, but it was dark inside at the time and he couldn’t be sure how well he had hid it. The robe would have been a dead give away. They would have known that he had been there.

The leader, who must have been a sergeant in the army, dispatched two men to search under the dock. They slid down the bank and came under the dock. They didn’t, however go into the water. Without going into the water they couldn’t see him.

While in the water, Jalad’s mind went to his friend. He sure hoped they weren’t going door to door in West Chanoch. He didn’t want them to find Tubal. Tubal’s grandfather must be aware of his involvement by now. If the slick talking Karim came along, he might be able to wheedle a list of Tubal’s friends from the old man. He might fall for Karim’s plea to help.
