Such simple steps are designed to help in the exploration of the possibilities of one’s ordinary self as one did earlier in life. According to famous developmental psychologist Erik Erickson, the task of adolescence is to create an identity for oneself. However, the task doesn’t end there. To be clear about ourselves takes a great deal of energy and determination on our part. It will also require patience and perseverance and a tolerance for failure that we may not have at this point. Yet, such situations do not close the door on our becoming stronger now to embrace more fully our narrative. As a matter of fact, just as an experienced sea captain, learning from our mistakes and being interested in correcting them in the present can make us an even more apt explorer of the depth of our ordinary selves.
